Web sharing fixed (was a short outage)

Hi all,

If you saw a problem with the web sharing earlier, it was due to a database misconfiguration so the share links could not be generated. It should be all fixed up now - please let us know if you see anything else.

New feature test - quick paste function for the web

Hi all,

Have you ever tried to paste a large block of text to somebody in IM and have it refused? We’ve put together a quick tool to help with this - https://www.allmydata.com/paste. It is pretty basic at the moment, but it will allow you to securely paste a large block of text and return a permanent link to it that you can share with other people. Some features we are planning to add are the ability to track all of your pastes if you are logged in, formatting, images, etc.

If you get a chance to play with this new feature and have any comments, just let us know!

Thanks,
Peter

Server move successful!

Hi all,

It looks like our server move was successful. All tests are passing now, but it’s always possible that we missed something so please let us know if you see anything unusual. You should have seen a short outage around 10amPDT today (Saturday) and everything back online before 11amPDT.

This move allows us to draw more power as we bring more servers online as well as provide better cooling for the existing servers.

Talk soon,
Peter

Small website outages today (Friday August 22nd, 2008)

Hi all,

Sorry for the small website outage today. We are moving servers to a bigger and better location (in the same building) but due to a mis-communication with our provider we experienced an series of small outages today (website and some internal databases) around 4-5pm PDT. Everything should be back to normal, but please let us know if you see anything perturbing. Note that this involved problems only with the access to our back-end storage servers, not problems with the servers themselves.

We still have the scheduled outage for tomorrow morning at 10am PDT when the website and related services are moved.

Talk soon!
Peter

Planned website outage - Saturday, August 23rd 1000-1400PDT

Warning!

Hi all,

We are expanding our server farm to a bigger and better location. For the most part this is pretty easy as each storage server can be moved without taking the grid down. However, at some point between 10am and 2pm PDT on Saturday, August 23rd 2008 we will move our main web server and related services. This will not affect native clients who are currently logged in but all web services will be down. The total duration of this outage should be less than 30 minutes and is planned for 10amPDT on Saturday.

I hope this is clear, if not just email us with questions at support at allmydata dot com.

Peter

Allmydata 3.1 going well, small website updates

Hi all,

Allmydata 3.1.x is going very well so far, we’ve more than doubled our daily new registrations and our storage service is behaving well. We have a fair amount of monitoring on the servers and service and are planning on publishing our metrics and performance against them.

We’ve also updated the website to fix some small formatting issues on the webdrive and also changed the buffering in the media player so you can stream large videos full-screen without downloading too much. An example is here. (Note that you need an account to view the video.)

Have fun,
Peter

Firefox now working!

Hi all,

Over the weekend we fixed the Firefox issue. Please let us know if you see any issues with it or any other browsers. The problem was a mis-type in a configuration file that pointed to the webdrive (http instead of https).

Thanks,
Peter

Webdrive currently broken on Firefox browsers

Hi all,
While rolling out some new web changes (media player, tiny urls for sharing) we inadvertantly broke the webdrive on Firefox and it will no longer load. This didn’t happen in our staging tests, so we are working on a fix now and will try to get it working as soon as possible. For the moment, it looks like IE7 and Safari are working fine.

Peter

Allmydata 3.1 Beta Build 2754 - Release Candidate

Hi all,

This beta release of Allmydata 3.1 looks to be our final release candidate for Allmydata 3.1. We made a few small bug fixes, and adjusted the installer to install in a directory named “Allmydata” instead of “Allmydata 3.1″. This prevents multiple installations confusing each other. I also wanted to point out again how we’ve reorganized the backups into a “Latest Backup” folder which contains files from the most recent backup, and an “Archives” directory which maintains a list of all of the previous backup snapshots. Note that maintaining versions may end up as a premium feature, but for the moment we are keeping track of everything that changes on a daily basis.

To use this latest release, please uninstall any existing Allmydata installations, then install Beta Build 2754 from scratch. It most likely will not work if you just install over an existing installation because the root directory name has changed.

Talk soon,
Peter
